Way too costly. Not practical for 21st century.
I bought this product for my Sony MiniDisc product line collection. I like that it is very small. It is actually the smallest MD portable I have seen. For the M200 version, I love the microphone -extension- cable that comes with the device because if you hook that straight into the original packaged Sony earbud headphones, you get an awesome pair of earbuds with a gold-tipped, braided extension cable. You can sort of "convert" your RH1 into an M200 if you just buy the sony stereo microphone and extension cable, that's the only difference. I also like the integration of the playback speed function because you can slow down songs and it slices it and spaces out the sounds in time rather than slowing down pitch with speed, like a vinyl record does if you slow that down. I like that they changed the battery to a Lithium based battery instead of Nickel because that means I don't have to worry about draining it then charging it, I can just charge it whenever and it's actually good for the battery. I do not like that the device's built-in display will NOT show the titles of the tracks, you can only see the track titles in the supplied wired "remote control". I do not like the high cost of this product because it is not practical today. I'm sure it was amazing when it came out but today, 2011-wise, you can get way more bang for your buck from a field recorder with expandable SD card options. The biggest complaint I have with this unit, is that while it does play back all formats of MD, it DOES NOT record in all formats. This is the last MD field recorder Sony decided to engineer. (The M200 is the identical except for that it belongs to a "packaged" SKU and comes with the microphone.) It should be able to read/write all MD formats. No excuse for leaving that out. It compares to other Hi-MD models but does not really "shine" as much as I had hoped it would. For example, the MZ-RH10 does every function this does and costs about 1/3 less (recent analysis from my own purchases on eBay). Even the remote for the RH1 works with the RH10. The RH910 is also the same as the RH10 but does not have a backlit display and is therefore more cost-effective. The RH910 and RH10 are the all-around best portable Hi-MD player/recorders I own. They also have much faster USB transfer times than the RH1 and M200.

It sounds and works OK, price was almost 2X what I paid for when a new one before mini-disc player/ recorders were discontinued by Sony. Since. I have a lot music on mini-disc that I would like to save that was recorded on the same type player/recorder, it took a while before I could find a machine that met my needs. It's a very small unit that must be carefully worked with.. I have not tried to see how compatible it is with my computer as far as down loading . Not as bass-heavy as the older MD players and recorders, but plays reliably, uses USB for charging, unfortunately insanely expensive Lithium stick battery, but overall very well built and works great. It's also the only MD model that allows moving things in and out (well, mostly) via SonicStage, and latest model to be produced by Sony. Happy with it, but admittedly older models like R900 sounded way nicer to my ears.Not as bass-heavy as the older MD players and recorders, but plays reliably, uses USB for charging, unfortunately insanely expensive Lithium stick battery, but overall very well built and works great. It's also the only MD model that allows moving things in and out (well, mostly) via SonicStage, and latest model to be produced by Sony. The best Minidisc recorder out there
This is the best Minidisc recorder ever made. It has sound quality beyond what any MP3 player is capable of. It's not all that "easy" to use (if you're used to today's Ipods, etc.) but it's not really supposed to be. After all, it's a Sony. But it's hands down the best Minidisc recorder you could ever own.
