Synopsis
The dramatic story of bringing five American airmen home …, In January 1944, a US Army Air Corps transport, en route to its home base in India, crashed into a snowfield in Tibet, killing all crew members. Because of the remote location and fierce winter weather, the aircraft was covered by heavy snowfall. The snowfield glaciated, completely hiding the aircraft until its accidental discovery by a Tibetan hunter in 1993. A nearby Chinese army garrison launched a quick Peoples' Liberation Army reconnaissance into the crash site to determine exactly what they might be dealing with-perhaps a recent air crash of a civilian airliner? Were there survivors? The Chinese army unit brought out remnants of the crashed airplane and three remains of the crew and notified the American Embassy in Beijing. Two more crewmen were determined to still be in the crash site. Then-Colonel William H. Jordan, commander of the US Army Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii, was assigned to investigate the crash site and to recover, identify, and repatriate the remains of the fallen US servicemen. Cold Sun: The Search for World War II Airmen Lost in a Tibetan Glacier is Jordan's recounting of the events surrounding the recovery, including the final, solemn duty of officially informing the lost crewmen's family members of the fate of their loved ones. He weaves the mission of the aircraft and crew's fate through the prism of America's history of identifying and recovering their fallen warriors as well as previous efforts and technological leaps in accomplishing this grim, necessary mission. Inspiring and informative, based in the personal reflections of Jordan and the others involved, Cold Sun tells the gripping story of a tragic loss, a harrowing recovery effort, and the human efforts involved. He also constructs the complex mosaic of how it occurred, from the cockpits of World War II transport planes to the history of recoveries in formerly "denied" areas such as Russia, North Korea, Southeast Asia, and China itself., Inspiring and informative, based in the personal reflections of Colonel William H. I don't give negatives; However, description was not correct; No price guide was included in this book.As you will see in book pic shown; title states price guide included, no price guide inside. Communication poor, description, no communication price guide missing from this book. Shipping time was weeks before it was even shipped. Blamed the shipping on warehouse. You own & operate a business; your warehouse is not up to standards you change who you do business with. It's your responsibility.

Great account of a recovery of bodies and data from a crash site long forgotten to history. Great closure for families long in doubt.
