La colonia suiza de Nueva Helvecia en Uruguay fue fundada debido a la situaci n econ mica insostenible en Europa en 1862 por colonos Suizos y en menor escala Alemanes, Austr acos y Franceses. Desde un principio la colonia funcion en armon a a pesar de los diferentes pa ses de origen y religiones. Los nombres de sus calles, los escudos cantonales en las fachadas de las viviendas, su monumento "El Surco", las fiestas de la cerveza, la fiesta del chocolate y sus grupos de danzas tradicionales, constantemente nos recuerda un pueblo que dejo su marca como el pionero en muchas industrias uruguayas. Los Suizos trajeron con ellos la profesi n de queseros, el famoso "Queso Colonia" es el queso suizo que se produc a en los cantones centrales de Suiza desde la Edad Media; el mismo queso que por 150 a os dio estabilidad econ mica a la colonia Suiza. Para 1900 hab an ya 100 queser as artesanales. Uruguay recibi a estos colonos agr colas ayudados por la ley de inmigraciones de 1853, que favorec a a todo individuo europeo dispuesto a colonizar las vastas extensiones solamente sobrepobladas por ganado vacuno salvaje. Un tercio de los casi 12,000 habitantes de Colonia Suiza son descendientes de los fundadores, los otros dos tercio han adoptado sus costumbres como propias. Las tradiciones son celebradas con respeto, no tanto por sus or genes europeos, sino por admiraci n a la vida sacrificada del inmigrante, que tuvo que abandonar su patria y seres queridos para ofrecer un mejor futuro a sus hijos.
