About this product

Product Information

This startling short anime feature was created entirely by one person, Maktoto Shinkai, on his home computer. Beautifully animated, VOICES OF A DISTANT STAR is the story of a young woman named Mikako and an alien race's attack on the human race. Feeling that she must help protect the Earth, Mikako leaves her true love, Noboru, and joins the resistance as a pilot. Sent to the far reaches of space, Mikako can only communicate to Noboru by cell-phone text messages. As time goes on, the messages take longer and longer to get one another, eventually taking a year or more. So, as Mikako lives and fights in the vacuum of space, staying the same age, Noboru waits and gets older, hoping that their love can survive the passage of time and the brutal war.

  • A love story transcending space and time.

Voices of a Distant Star is quite possibly the best anime movie ever developed. Based in a time frame just after 2048 it is a romantic story of two young adults torn apart when one is chosen to be a crewmember of a U.N. fleet being sent to fight a hostile species of aliens who destroyed a settlement on mars. as the distance between the fleet and earth grows greater so does the time that it takes to communicate and Noboru (the boy left on earth) slowly becomes someone who only waits for mail from the stars. This problem only worsens when the UN fleet engages an armada of alien ships. The amazing visuals and animating would be impressive if they came out of a large anime developer but when you consider that they where made by just one person it seems almost impossible. The music strengthens ...

  • Voices of a Distant Star - Hoshi no Koe

This is a neat little piece of anime that I wanted to own. The main feature is very short, only about a half hour or so, but the story is a pretty good one. The entire film was done by a single person on his home Mac computer which I found amazing. There are different voice and sound tracks you can use while watching, the original with the director and his fiancee doing the voices and a later redub version. In the end its a great little separated love story worth viewing but probably not available at most local stores.

  • Voices of a Distant Star

While watching this movie I was constantly amazed that Makoto Shinkai was able to make it all on his own. I was stunned by the vibrant world he created yet was less amazed by the plot and character development. After watching this movie you are left with alot of questions which is not necessarily a bad thing. If the plot and characters were developed more this would easily be a perfect 5 but even as is the movie is a remarkable accomplishment.

  • Good visuals, thin characters

I got this to inspire a friend who is also trying to make a movie with his Mac. I thought it was visually stunning and I liked the design, but I felt that the characters were underdevloped. I never knew why they were so important to each other or worth not giving up on. While I was interested in the adventures in space and the protagonist's feelings, I felt impatient whenever we went back to Earth. The bonus movie I thought worked better, and would recommend watching the full version.

  • Excellent piece of art

Makoto Shinkai is a wonderful director and has the unmatched ability to give a beautiful, yet melancholic view of what reality really is. Voices of a Distant Star did not fail in living up to the expectations I alloted. The movie has a certain grace to it as all Shinkai films tend to have and the beauty can almost bring tears to my eyes.
