About this product

Product Information

A celebration of the rich Suffolk dialect. The text and cartoons from Richard Scollins provide a feast of linguistic fun and capture well the warmth and humour of Suffolk people. This book is a treasure trove of folk history and vivid English expressions found in the Suffolk dialect. Sloightly on th' Huh! traces its origins, capturing the warmth and humour to be found among those who live in the region. Not only is the Suffolk dialect a fascinating one, it's also a hugely important one for understanding the history of Britain. Suffolk is generally accepted, by historians and academics alike, as being the first page of English history. It's where the English (the Angles) first settled and gave England, English and East Anglia their names. It is where the Angles and Saxons first mixed and formed the basis for our rich language. Suffolk is where the English language began and by simple deduction, Suffolk is the oldest English dialect. Suffolk is a complete mix of all our uninvited guests, from the Romans to the Normans, plus those that were invited, like the Dutch. Only in Suffolk, do you find this particular rich mix, at the same time maintaining a strong Anglo-Saxon foundation. This book takes you into that unique world, giving you a taste of British history through one of its most important and ancient dialects. Author Charlie Haylock lives in Sudbury and was brought up in a traditional Suffolk family. He has lived some of his life 'abroad' in Essex and London. As a noted authority on Suffolk dialect, he was brought in as the accent coach for Ralph Fiennes during the making of the 2021 Netflix film, The Dig, which tells the true story of the archaeological excavation at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk.

  • This book is well written, Interesting, informative, highly amusing and well illustrated.

Charlie Haylock has a very readable style. He has terrific knowledge of the English language, its usage and its history. Suffolk is his "native" tongue and I think he seeks to preserve the way he speaks and the character of Suffolk for posterity! This book is interesting, highly amusing and well illustrated. His other books are also worth reading.
