About this product

Product Information

From the double Man Booker prize-winning author of Wolf Hall, Bring Up the Bodies and The Mirror & the Light comes an extraordinary work of historical imagination - this is Hilary Mantel's epic novel of the French Revolution. A spellbinding novel which recounts the events between the fall of the Ancient Regime and the peak of the Terror, as seen through the eyes of the French Revolution's three protagonists - Georges-Jacques Danton, Maximilien Robespierre and Camille Desmoulins, men whose mix of ambition, idealism, and ego helped unleash the darker side of the Revolution's ideals and brought them eventually to their own tragic ends. Critically acclaimed upon first publication, 'A Place of Greater Safety' is one of Mantel's most celebrated works of fiction.

  • Don’t.

This is one of the most tedious books I have ever read. It was a stubborn act of will to finish it.

  • The Number One Book On My Favourites List

Pure and simple: this book is outstanding. Hilary Mantel achieved the unthinkable with this book and more. Form the roots of revoultion to its initial twist into something more sinister, this book has it. I read this book two Christmas' ago - spanning over 800 pages - it gripped me alike to an iron chain wrapped tight. The story would not leave me, and personally, I never wanted it too either. The author has laboured perfectly writing this book, bringing life into such historical characters from French history as Maximilien Robespierre, Georges Danton and Camille Desmoulins. Even though the book is typically slow at its initial start, which I expected from it, in its progress it opens up to reveal the horrors the French Revolution brought upon its own people and also the world, in the ...
