Synopsis
An icon (from the Greek word "eikon," "image") is a wooden panel painting of a holy person or scene from Orthodox Christianity, the religion of the Byzantine Empire that is practiced today mainly in Greece and Russia. It was believed that these works acted as intermediaries between worshipers and the holy personages they depicted. Their pictorial language is stylized and primarily symbolic, rather than literal and narrative. Indeed, every attitude, pose, and color depicted in an icon has a precise meaning, and their painters--usually monks--followed prescribed models from iconographic manuals. The goal of this book is to catalogue the vast heritage of images according to iconographic type and subject, from the most ancient at the Monastery of Saint Catherine in the Sinai to those from Greece, Constantinople, and Russia. Chapters focus on the role of icons in the Orthodox liturgy and on common iconic subjects, including the fathers and saints of the Eastern Church and the life of Jesus and his followers. As with other volumes in the Guide to Imagery series, this book includes a wealth of color illustrations in which details are called out for discussion.

As described... A+++ on shipping and price... C (and that's being generous) on time. If you have forever and a month of Sundays to wait around then by all means do so. The price was great and the seller communicated wonderfully and the item was packed well so it wasn't damaged during transit all A pluses in my book just took a little bit longer than I anticipated.

  • Icon sourcebook par excellance!

This book is the best general reference on Eastern Orhodox Icons from a historical viewpoint as well as a biblical, scholarly and theological/spiritual point of view. Its scope is thorough yet concise. For each Icon there is Biblical relevance and texts cited. The symbolic and spirital meaning of the images and details of the icons are described in detail, listing essential characteristics and themes. The Icon writer is listed for each as well as its date of origin, current location and school or iconographic technique used. there are excellent an lavish reproductions of many icons for each saint and an explanation of Byzantine tradition and religious practice is included. Cross-referencing, a glossary of terms used and an index of subjects makes this book a great gem to have use, study, ...

  • Superb introdruction to classical orthodox icons

I have been a collector and dealer in orthodox icons for over 25 years. This volume has several benefits: excellent color representations of subjects, concise and to-the-point historical and miracle-related events, coverage of some of the rarer types of icons, handy carry about size. Well worth acquisition for novice or long-established collector. I wish that I had found this book earlier.

  • Windows to heaven.

This is one of the best produced English written books on icons. Large selection of color prints. Well written descriptions. The only thing that would have improved the book is that it should be larger. If it was 8.5" by 11" the photos would be better to see. Still a great book.
