Nach der "Postmoderne" kann vom Gewissen als einer identitätsstiftenden Instanz keine Rede mehr sein. Zurück bleibt eine Leerstelle, deren dauerhafte und einseitige Besetzung gerade vom widersprechenden Gewissen verhindert wird. Gewissen, das nicht mehr von einer höheren Position aus erkennt oder aus tieferer Einsicht urteilt, erscheint nun vielmehr als "Platzhalter", ohne selbst den Platz zu beanspruchen. Es vermag nicht Gewissheit zu geben, sondern irritiert vermeintliche Gewissheiten. Damit ist Gewissen keine Instanz, die über gut oder böse richtet und entscheidet, was getan oder gelassen werden soll. Als Differenzerfahrung drückt Gewissen Widersprüche aus und bietet Anlässe zum Anderswerden. Insofern kann Gewissen nicht gebildet werden, sondern fordert Bildung heraus.
