Great product for tuning up old laptops (and you will never fill it up!)
I have had similar to these before and the extra spin speed of 5400 rpm plus the 8MB cache does give a noticeable improvement in speed compared with the basic 4200 rpm drives. Note that some very old laptops such as the Toshiba 740CDT can only "see" 20GB maximum. In such cases if the drive is partitioned exactly at 20GB it can be used as a double drive C and D (2 x 20GB) Snags with used drives as opposed to new in retail box are to do with installation. Retail box drives will usually have an installer CD. OEM and used won't. If one is installing the drive in a Windows 98 machine it is inadvisable to use the web in order to obtain drivers as 98 is vulnerable to viruses. Whether a driver CD can be made using a Windows 7 (64 bit) machine remains to be seen! (Partition Magic or similar ... A simple review
This hard drive was bought as a like-for-like replacement in a 'Hi-grade' low spec laptop. On the one hand I was not happy that the original drive failed so soon after purchasing the laptop second-hand. I suspect that because the battery was so poor in the laptop, that any interruption to the power supply would have switched off the laptop with little time for the hard drive to safely park the head and this is what caused the damage, but modern hard drives should have a safeguard against this. This second hand replacement drive was a breeze to fit providing I had the cable adapter and the caddy from the old drive. the drive works well. What else can one say about a hard drive without getting technical? Good hdd, does what it should
This is a used drive, and somewhat small in capacity compared to new models. I required it to resurrect an old laptop. It worked fine. It had been cleared of all data, and once windows reinstalled runs fine.
