This film has been adapted from John Irving's novel 'A Widow for One Year', living in the beach community of East Hampton, New York in 1958 and chronicles one pivotal summer in the lives of famous children's book author Ted Cole (Jeff Bridges) and his wife Marion (Kim Basinger). Their once-great marriage has been strained by tragedy. Her resulting despondency and his subsequent infidelities have prevented the couple from confronting a much-needed change in their relationship. Eddie O'Hare, the young man Ted hires to work as his summer assistant, is the couple's unwitting yet willing pawn and, ultimately, the catalyst in the transformation of their lives. The film exlplores the complexities of love in both its brightest and darkest corners.
The idea of a film starring Jeff Bridges and based on a novel by John Irving indicates that this will be interesting. The fact that the novel in question is Irving's masterpiece "A widow for one year" makes watching irresistible. What's more Irving himself does the adaptation, greatly simplifying the 800-plus page story as he goes. The story centres on a teenage boy who spends a summer with a middle-aged couple played by Bridges and Kim Basinger. The hosts have been touched by tragedy, but that doesn't mean that the film wallows in misery. Indeed you watch with interest for what happens next to the characters.
