L'Affaire du comte de Lally a donne lieu a une abondante litterature, apres avoir suscite de nombreux mouvements d'opinion. La condamnation de Lally et les procedures sur cassation qu'elle provoqua entrainerent des polemiques multiples qui seront evoquees ici : mais ce qui est surtout interessant, est, au-dela des debats devant le Parlement de Paris, a l'issue desquels Louis XV laissa livrer au bourreau l'un de ses lieutenants generaux, nomme par lui commissaire general aux Indes, de pouvoir faire le point sur ce proces, le plus grand peut-etre du XVIIIe siecle. Ensuite de deux cassations par le Conseil d'Etat prive du Roi, les Parlementaires de Bourgogne, saisis apres un premier renvoi devant le Parlement de Normandie, maintinrent la decision des Conseillers de Paris. Emportees par la Revolution, les juridictions royales ne purent dire leur dernier mot. " L'Affaire Lally-Tolendal " releve ainsi du tribunal de l'Histoire.
