About this product

Product Information

Collecting, maintaining, and shooting classic firearms. Vintage gun expert Diggory Hadoke (author of Vintage Guns for the Modern Shot and The British Boxlock Gun & Rifle ) has now produced a major work on the subject for which he is best known: the hammer gun. With a fascinating mixture of historical analysis, practical application, and personal reflection, he makes a robust case for the Victorian hammer gun as the finest sporting gun available today, just as it was a century ago. The reader will discover all that is worth knowing about the subject: how the guns were devised, crafted, and used, how they were perfected, and how they work. Modern applications are given equal weight to historical ones, and subjects such as the selection of suitable ammunition, stripping, refurbishing, and customizing will prove invaluable to anyone contemplating taking a hammer gun into the field and using it as they would a modern gun. This is the fullest and most practical account of the development of the breech-loading center-fire hammer gun and its many variations yet written, with a guide for owners and collectors that will prove invaluable when buying and maintaining their guns.

Book did not match listing photo (pic2) The listings only photograph was of an autograph page (pic 1) which means this seller did not photograph the actual item being sold. The seller had to be contacted twice to get a full refund. The shipping cost was very expensive and item was poorly packaged. I have been buying items from ebay for many years and this is the first time I have delt with a seller whose listing was so blatantly dishonest. Buyers beware!

$10 shipping and took over 2 weeks, refused to give tracking number, the cover is bent but they did not disclose that, poorly packaged and arrived open, overall bad experience and customer service- they just send copy and paste messages. I would avoid this seller.

  • The Best book on the subject

I had read articles by Mr. Hadoke in Double Gun Journal and found them very thorough and informative, so I bought his book on hammer guns. I have a few hammer guns and thought I knew a lot about them until I read this book. He has great writing style in being concise and informative and couples this with his experience and opinions, which are my favorite parts of the book. There are numerous great pictures and tables of useful data. This is a jewel to be read and reread and used as a reference for anyone interested in the history, mechanics, and use of hammer guns in modern sports. I doubt if there will ever be a better one.

  • Good info and beautiful pictures

Mr. Hadoke is obviously knowledgeable and an excellent writer. The book's pictures are worth thousands of words. Must read for those interested in English firearms. Few will read this book and not yearn for a hammer gun.
