Synopsis
For this spine-tingling new collection, Philippa Pearce, herself an award-winning children's writer, has brought together 40 ghost stories to captivate children and adults alike. Beginning with M. R. James's 'A School Story', and including 'The Ghostly Goat of Glaramar' and 'The House that Lacked a Bogle', this anthology presents tales by outstanding children's authors: amongst them Eleanor Farjeon, Alison Uttley, Jan Mark, Penelope Lively, Leon Garfield, and Tim Wynne-Jones., As a genre, children's ghost writing is a relative newcomer to the literary field. While children's literature has flourished for over 200 years, supernatural fiction for the young has really only come into its own in the twentieth century. Dread and Delight, a spine-tingling collection of 40 ghost stories written for children over the course of the present century, charts its development from its roots in the writings of authors such as M. R. James, A. C. Benson and Walter de la Mare, to renowned modern authors including Isaac Bashevis Singer, Jan Mark, Leon Garfield, and Penelope Lively. Compiled by the award-winning novelist Phillipa Pearce, author of the classic children's book Tom's Midnight Garden, these stories will captivate adults and children alike. Pearce includes two previously unpublished stories by Lucy Boston and Robert Westall, and a full introduction and lively notes on the authors. The collected stories represent an engaging variety--drawn from all over the English-speaking world, including America, India, and the Caribbean as well as Great Britain. Treating the supernatural with humor and whimsy, as well as with a proper respect, the tales all succeed brilliantly in creating an atmosphere of suspense or unease in order to produce the pleasurable tingle of anticipation that children relish as much as adults. As Phillip Pearce writes in her introduction, "fear becomes awe and wonder...the delight is in the dread.", A collection of spine-tingling ghost stories.. Excellent seller. Package was delayed ( by bad weather) and then misplaced at PO( placed in wrong box #) but I contacted the seller and they responded quickly and I got my item today. This seller went the extra mile and I would highly recommend them and will shop here again. I also want to say the price for this complete hard to find item was way below most of the other listings. Condition was good as stated, and although I've only watched the first disc it's quality is good. Thank you!!

The cd was well packed and arrived safely. Unfortunately, the disc I received wasn't the original cd. It had been replaced by a CD-R. I immediately alerted World of Books USA regarding the problem and an officer of the company responded within 24 hours. They have provided a full refund of the purchase. Great customer service and communication. The case was resolved to my satisfaction. Will continue to do business with World of Books USA. Thanks.

I received my items in great condition. The books were packed really well and survived the shipping process well. The books appeared described by the seller. Excellent service by the seller, who responded quickly to an inquiry that was more of an issue with the current state of USPS. Excellent transaction with the seller overall!
