About this product

Product Information

Sunday Times Bestseller 'A paradigm-smashing chronicle of joyous entanglement' Charles Foster Waterstones Non-Fiction Book of the Month (September) Are trees social beings? How do trees live? Do they feel pain or have awareness of their surroundings? In The Hidden Life of Trees, Peter Wohlleben shares his deep love of woods and forests and explains the amazing processes of life, death, and regeneration he has observed in the woodland and the amazing scientific processes behind the wonders of which we are blissfully unaware. Much like human families, tree parents live together with their children, communicate with them, and support them as they grow, sharing nutrients with those who are sick or struggling and creating an ecosystem that mitigates the impact of extremes of heat and cold for the whole group. As a result of such interactions, trees in a family or community are protected and can live to be very old. In contrast, solitary trees, like street kids, have a tough time of it and in most cases die much earlier than those in a group. Drawing on groundbreaking new discoveries, Wohlleben presents the science behind the secret and previously unknown life of trees and their communication abilities; he describes how these discoveries have informed his own practices in the forest around him. As he says, a happy forest is a healthy forest, and he believes that eco-friendly practices not only are economically sustainable but also benefit the health of our planet and the mental and physical health of all who live on Earth. After a walk through the woods with Wohlleben, you'll never look at trees the same way again.

A fascinating book if you like trees

If you are interested in trees, the hidden world of trees is a fascinating book to read, the author explains how trees breathe, communicate as well as survive in our ever changing world particularly in the 21st century. He explains how fungi works in partnership with trees, trees are so important to our environment they shed their leaves in autumn this acts as a food for the tree to store during the winter but the food store is useful for regeneration in spring time !

  • Trees R Us

Excellent book, from the start you feel that you are in the company of a forestry expert taking you gently on an in depth tour of his natural habitat. Your understanding of what a tree is flips and you begin to see the world as a living organism of many fascinating inter related parts. Every statement he makes is backed up with observations and relevant research proving his point and clarifying each. The chapters each cover the essential facts and take you on the next step in comprehending how a forest communicates, helps and nurtures each member tree, like a human family. Brilliant to discover that what you feel in a forest is the work of the trees and that they have feelings too. This book has opened my eyes well worth a reread

  • Just lovely altogether

Great book, written more for people who don't know much about trees and who want to change that. As a long time tree/plant friend it still had new information well worth having. What he writes about only confirms what I perceived already through my senses but it is nice to have it in words especially for those who are starting to open up to the reality that life is conscious in all its forms. Lovely book. Quick chapters easily digested, and still interesting enough to come back to again for a light and thoughful read on a chilly winters afternoon

  • This book has changed the way I look at the world....

Very easy to read, with fascinating insights about the social life of forests and the effects of human impact on the natural world, backed up by scientific research (in the background, so it is not dry reading). Very relevant now, as climate change and de-forestation is starting to effect us all....
