Powerful social drama tracing changes in rural Italy during the first half of the twentieth century.
A beautifully filmed story based around the friendship between two youths from very different social backgrounds, growing up in a near-feudal country estate in a picturesque part of Italy. It traces social and political changes in Italy in the first half of the twentieth century. Some would say that the film is too long and is slow-moving; however, bear in mind that this is not a Hollywood action film, but a European ‘ art movie’ by Bernardo Bertolucci, an auteur director who produced some of his most interesting work during that period of the’60s and ‘70s when directors were given more of a free-hand to explore their own ideas.A beautifully filmed story based around the friendship between two youths from very different social backgrounds, growing up in a near-feudal country estate in a picturesque part of Italy. Should have been a TV mini-series not Cinema release
Bleak, but interesting insight from Bertolucci. Great to see De Niro and Sutherland and Depardieu. Masterful from Sterling Hayden and Burt Lancaster. Ennio Morricone always has something to listen to. Understood why it failed at box office but interesting anyway.

Because it lasts for over 5 hours this film is a bit off putting for some. However, for enthusiastic lovers of epic movies with excellent actors, this relatively unknown film is a gem.
