It has always been impossible to find anything negative to say about Steptoe and Son, as the two main protagonists are always on top form. From their first appearance on the Beeb's Playhouse Theatre, meant to be a one-off, they captivated, charmed, amused, and despaired, as they reached through the small screen and found instant empathy in my critical soul. It is tragic that they are destined to fail at every endeavour they undertake, but it is this sense of overarching tragedy that allows us to laugh at our own failures writ large through the characterisation of two of England's most accomplished Shakespearian Thespians. Steptoe and Son is a series of half hour episodes and a some full length filnms that are viewable over and over,. and that never fail to reach our humanity. They are ...
