About this product

Product Information

Weird phenomena lead a brilliant geophysics professor, Dr. Josh Keyes (Aaron Eckhart), to the discovery that the Earth's core has stopped revolving, ultimately resulting in severe natural disasters and radiation akin to that of a microwave--and the end of the world. Keyes' worst fears are confirmed by superstar scientist Dr. Conrad Zimsky (Stanley Tucci), who turns to his former partner, Dr. Ed Brazzleton (Delroy Lindo), who has devoted twenty years to creating a ship that can journey to the center of the Earth. The U.S. government, whose secret experiments, unbeknownst to all of the team but Zimzky, may have caused the problem, builds the ship at record speed and sends a team in to set off nuclear bombs that will restart the core. Astronauts Colonel Robert Iverson (Bruce Greenwood) and Major Rebecca Childs (Hilary Swank), and a nuclear weapons specialist, Dr. Serge Leveque (Tcheky Karyo) are also assigned to the mission, which promises both spectacular discoveries and tremendous danger. Witty one-liners save the film from taking itself too seriously while the special effects keep the action exciting. Directed by Jon Amiel (COPYCAT, ENTRAPMENT), THE CORE also stars Alfre Woodard, DJ Qualls, and Richard Jenkins.

Worth watching if you love far-out sci-fi movies

One has to place common sense and basic knowledge of science aside before watching this movie. While the characters and complicated futuristic machinery are presented well, getting it to to come together is a giant leap for mind-kind. The movie was good at the outset but seemed to suffer from outlandish impossibility at the end. It was worth a one-time viewing but I think it will be a while before I play the DVD again.

  • A Journey to the Center of the Earth, Hollywood Style

The Core takes man's perceived disdain to heart, the heart of the planet Earth that is. It seems that there are major unnatural "natural" disasters happening in the world, all caused by the effects of the core of the earth having stopped its spinning. This movie does a good job of balancing scientific principles and good old science fiction with great Hollywood special effects. Hillary Swank once again shows her acting abilities, as well as Aaron Eckhart playing a modest genius scientist who finds himself at the center of a massive problem with no easy solution. Always cool when the scientists are the ones who actually go and do the dirty work, unlike some other disaster-adventure movies of this same time. Overall a great movie and a good time.

  • Entertaining Popcorn Flick

Lets face it. This film will never win any Oscars for Best Picture or for Best Acting. This film was made for one reason and one reason only: TO HAVE A GREAT TIME AT THE MOVIES!!! I did not expect much from this film going into it, but I was a bit surprised at just how entertaining this film was. The plot did have its faults and some of the theories and science were just downright laughable, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I was watching an old sci-fi flick from the 60's on a rainy Saturday afternoon.....and I liked that. This is a throwback to the genre of sci-fi movies that were made to entertain and to enjoy..not to debate over. I have to admit that this film does have quite the emotional impact once it gets going....much like the vastly underrated disaster flick "Deep Impact." ...

  • Trapped in a capsule with Hillary Swank, lol

Earth is not a Planet, there is no "Core", LOL This is still an entertaining movie, one of my favorites. If you'd like to know more visit my YouTube Channel mulder2400 online. The Era of DisAster (Dead-Star) has been upon the Static Fixed Earth Plane for a while, and thanks to Movies like this you haven't even noticed.

  • Fun Flick

I loved this movie. It's goofy and scientifically silly, but it jogs something in me that makes me a fan of a good sci-fi film. The pace is quite good. The acting is good, esp Tucci. The script does not lag once. So it can't happen.. So what?
