It is as gripping a read as "Northern Lights" and leaves you hanging and wondering where the second book will take you. "The Subtle Knife" did an enthralling change of characters. However it did feel like a prequel in some ways. No we know how Lyra gor her Golden Compass. I eagerly await the next book. Philip Pullman is as skillful as ever in engaging with his readers.

It's an enjoyable addition to the Dark Materials canon, but i hadn't realised before purchase that it's a prequel. As such, there's only so much that can happen, given that we know everything that happens in the future. It's all very nice, but doesn't really add much. The one particularly interesting (brief) part for me seems to be set in kind of a different world. It's a bit mysterious. Otherwise it all just trundles along getting us a bit closer to the events we already know well... I'm sorry to sound negative, but is this the best that can be produced by Pullman within the "Dust worlds"?

I would highly recommend this book to adolescents and adults alike .It's a dark psychological thriller but written with an innocence and vulnerabilities of a child , I was gripped throughout, a bit disappointed with the end but as this is one of a trilogy I'm forgiving .
