Im Buch wird die vielseitige Lebensgeschichte von Dr. August Ziegler (1885-1937) prasentiert, die 1885 in dem schoenen Frankenstadtchen Marktbreit begann. Nach der Real- und Handelsschule in Marktbreit besuchte er 1902-1904 die Koeniglichen Industrieschule zu Nurnberg. Dann studierte er Landwirtschaft und Chemie in Weihenstephan und wurde 1911 an der Technischen Hochschule Munchen promoviert mit der Dissertation uber die Basalborste der zweizeiligen Gerste . 1911 bis 1914 wirkte er als Pflanzenzuchter in der deutschen Kolonie Togo. An der Kaiserlichen Landeskulturanstalt Nuatja versuchte er mit Zuchtungsexperimenten den Ertrag zu steigern. Nach der Kriegsgefangenschaft leitete August Ziegler 1921 bis zu seinem fruhen Tod 1937 die Bayerische Landesanstalt fur Weinbau und Gartenbau in Wurzburg-Veitshoechheim. Er widmete sich dem Weinbau und der Rebenzuchtung in Franken (und in der Pfalz). Die zwei immer noch aktuellen Silvanerklone Wu 78 und Wu 92 und die Muller Thurgau-Klone Wu 7-5 und Wu 12-4 stammen aus seiner Selektionsarbeit. Zu seinen besonderen Verdiensten gehoert die Neuzuchtung der Rebsorte Rieslaner als Kreuzung aus Riesling und Silvaner (1921).
