Der Name der Stadt leitet sich von dem Apostel Sankt Jakob ( Santiago ) her, der laut Legenden hier begraben liegt. Santiago ist zweifellos eine der sehenswertesten Stadte in Spanien, mit grossartigen Bauwerken in einem unverwechselbaren Stil. Es ist aber auch eine Stadt voller Leben, in der Menschen aller Altersgruppen und Standen aus ganz Europa sich begegnen. Das heute uber 100.000 Einwohner fassende Santiago de Compostela galt neben Jerusalem und Rom lange als drittes grosses Zentrum der mittelalterlichen Pilgertradition. Das war einer der wichtigsten Grunde, dass der Pilgerweg nach Santiago de Compostela 1987 vom Europaparlament zum ersten 'Europaischen Kulturweg' erklart wurde. Nicht nur die Zielstadt der Pilger, sondern auch der Pilgerweg - mit vielen Stadten und Etappen - selbst stehen seit langer Zeit im Interesse der Historiker, Geographen und anderer Wissenschaftler, denn durch die Erforschung alter Pilgerwege lassen sich viele Aufschlusse uber das Leben der Menschen, Verbreitung von Ideen und Innovationen sowie die Stadtentwicklung im Mittelalter sammeln. Die Pilgerfahrten waren fur die Menschen die einzige Moeglichkeit zu reisen und so ihre gewohnte Umgebung fur einige Zeit zu verlassen. Mit den Pilgern wanderten viele neue Entdeckungen uber groessere Entfernungen. Daruber hinaus wurden entlang der Pilgerwege neue Stadte gegrundet, die von dem wichtigen Wirtschaftszweig des mittelalte
