Reviews
"Mother, brother and lover fall into a nightmarish relationship where all play dangerous roles. ... Tom moves us in and out of the narrative by frequently addressing his dead lover or himself. Through this dual consciousness, the audience must share the pain and violence of homophobia." - Canadian Literature, "Funny, harsh, tender, and terrible, the play engages us in a twisted game that plays itself in a rural setting where innocence and boiling anger collide." - Montreal Sun, "A devastating tale of lies and hatred and their tragic consequences. By juxtaposing truth and lies, culture and nature, fragility and brutality, in this play with the overtones of an ancient tragedy, Michel Marc Bouchard avoids moralizing. An admirable feat when dealing with themes like homophobia and intolerance. Tom and the Coyote illustrates an age-old truth: art is the most beautiful lie." 'e" Luc Boulanger, Le Devoir "Extremely well written, a work of great density." 'e" Catherine Perrin, CBC "Constantly shifting between the violence of virile lust and the dulling comfort of lies, Tom and the Coyote reveals the full range of Michel Marc Bouchard'e(tm)s talents 'e¦ Funny, harsh, tender and terrible, the play engages us in a twisted game that plays itself in a rural setting where innocence and boiling anger collide 'e¦" 'e" Josianne Desloges, Sun
Synopsis
Following the accidental death of his lover, and in the throes of his grief, urban ad executive Tom travels to the country to attend the funeral and to meet his mother-in-law, Agatha, and her son, Francis - neither of whom know Tom even exists. Arriving at the remote rural farm, and immediately drawn into the dysfunction of the family's relationships, Tom is blindsided by his lost partner's legacy of untruth. With the mother expecting a chainsmoking girlfriend, and the older brother hellbent on preserving a facade of normalcy, Tom is coerced into joining the duplicity until, at last, he confronts the torment that drove his lover to live in the shadows of deceit. The lover - the friend, the son, the brother, the nameless dead man - has left behind a fable woven of false-truths which, according to his own teenage diaries, were essential to his survival. In this same rural setting, one young man had once destroyed another young man who loved yet another. Like an ancient tragedy, years later, this drama will shape the destiny of Tom. In a play that unfolds with progressively blurred boundaries between lust and brutality, between truth and elaborate action, Bouchard dramatizes how gay men often must learn to lie before they learn how to love. Throughout 2011 and 2012, Tom at the Farm was produced in Quebec and France, as Tom à la ferme , and in Mexico, as Tom en la granja . Award-winning Quebec director Xavier Dolan adapted the play for the screen in 2013, with Caleb Landry Jones in the leading role., Lambda Literary Award, Drama: Michel Marc Bouchard, Tom at the Farm, translated by Linda Gaboriau (Winner) Following the accidental death of his lover, and in the throes of his grief, urban ad executive Tom travels to the country to attend the funeral and to meet his mother-in-law, Agatha, and her son, Francis - neither of whom know Tom even exists. - r***r (2959)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseBook arrived today, 2 days before deadline given by the seller. Well-packaged & in good condition. Price was very competitive, & the book was accurately listed. Great communication. I appreciate the seller getting back to me when I was having trouble tracking the book's delivery progress. Apparently there were 2 different tracking numbers - one in Canada & the other in the U.S., since it was initially shipped from Canada. Thank you very much for your quick response & helpful information.Rethinking Investing: A Very Short Guide to Very Long-Term Investing by Charles (#396183075510)
- e***_ (13)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseSeller handles a massive inventory so I give them grace on the slow processing and shipping. They were very communicative and prompt with their response when I messaged in asking about it. Book was in good condition as described. Small ding on the page edges which wasn't mentioned, but that's fairly common even at your typical book store. Still a good value and I'd buy from them again.
- 0***i (5)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseThe first item arrived with some damage to the inside back cover, but the seller responded immediately, assuring me they’d provide a replacement, and even told me I could keep the original. They were upfront about a short delay, and gave a clear estimated ship date, and followed up right on time once it shipped. The replacement arrived in perfect condition and exactly as described. I really appreciated their transparency and professionalism. Would definitely buy from them again!
