I bought this album because I grew up during the 50s and 60s, and the 60s in particular was the era I really enjoyed. Also during the 60s we especially had ''The Mersey Sound'' introduced to us. This originated from where the merchant seaman who had visited America during the late 50s and early 60s were bringing back lots of '78s' and '45' single records which not many people in The UK - let alone Liverpool - had even heard. These records found their way via Family members and friends to where the pop group members eventually got hold of them. Also during the early 60s some American singers were also performing in Hamburg, where again the Liverpool Merchant seamen were also bringing back stories about the Hamburg nightlife with its live music acts. This gave some of the Liverpool pop groups the notion to go and try to earn what might have been some easy money. Needless to say The Beatles were amongst the many groups who took this journey in search of fame. The Merseybeats were not so well known as say, The Beatles, Gerry and The Pacemakers and The Searchers but they were fairly well known and particularly did some good Rythmn and Blues acts as well as basic Rock and Roll music. The Merseybeats, The Searchers and The Swinging Blue Jeans were noted for their cleaner and quiet image, wheras The Beatles were an infamously loud rocking and shouting group, who swore and drank on stage. During the later part of 1963 and early '64 the more quieter groups had made their own reputation of although being able to perform the Rock 'n' Roll stuff, showed that they could still perform with some nice ballads as well as looking good while doing it too. The Merseybeats were a fore-runner in this field, and even actually performed some Burt Bacharach songs too, also making the top ten. The Merseybeats may have looked to some like Cavaliers in their stage gear, but they sounded good too. They didn't quite reach the heights of The Beatles and Gerry & The Pacemakers but then a few others didn't either. But it was probably only because The Beatles and Gerry were the best, had the image, their own music and won most of the fame. For me though, The Merseybeats were a good group and I liked their act.Read full review
As someone who was there in the exciting 60's I had seen the Merseybeats several times live and subsequently forgotten about them. Recently I had bought a compilation of 60's music and it included a track from the Merseybeats- Wishin' and Hopin'. I had forgotten what a good sound they had. As a result of hearing this track I bought the album of their best sounds. It is an excellent cd containing many of their better known tracks and many lesser known. If you want a nostalgic return to the days in the 60's when music from Liverpool dominated the charts on both sides of the Atlantic buy this cd. I am sure like me you will feel the contribution by the Merseybeats has been greatly underestimated. An excellent collection from the golden period of pop. Buy it!
