About this product
Product Information
Stone House: The City of London Asylum is a record of the staff, patients and building during its 139-year history at Cotton Lane, Stone, near Dartford.Author Francine Payne from Northfleet, who is a teacher at Sweyne Junior School, Keary Road, Swanscombe, was commissioned to write the book by the Stone House trust after writing two other books about hospitals in the area. While working as a librarian and archivist at Darenth Hospitals Trust, Ms Payne became interested in the history of hospitals and wrote two books - A History of the Darenth Hospitals, which is currently out of print, and Joyce Green and the River Hospitals. In her latest book, she tells the story of the asylum from the day it opened in April 1866 until its closure in 2005. The original building was designed by James Bunstone Bunning, a surveyor to the City of London, to house pauper lunatics in the capital, who were previously sent to Bethlem Asylum in Lambeth.
