    Untested as yet, but just pleased to have it!

    I bought this as a spare for one that I already have and am using, as they are now getting very hard to find. As such, I haven't used it yet, but it was exactly as described. Two other dealers had advertised the same drive, but had actually sent me a later substitute model as they didn't actually have it, and unfortunately these were unsuitable for my purposes as I specifically needed a non-advanced format drive. Although not tested, the drive appears to be brand new in its original packaging, so I have no reason to think that there will be any problems with it when I do put it into service. Very happy.

    Cool air flow an advantage

    One might be tempted to believe that Western Digital black drives last forever. I had a WD1001FALS 1 TB 2011 drive (bought new) as the secondary drive in two computers and they have performed flawlessly for some years. Recently I replaced these with WD2002FAEX 2 TB drives from 2012 and 2013, this time 2nd hand. While the drives are quiet enough and faster (64 MB cache up from 32 MB, SATA III up from SATA II) they can run hotter by some 5 degrees C. Keeping them in range under stress requires a good air flow above the drive, so I found it best not to put another drive above it if mounted horizontally. That said, I have a feeling that they just carry on regardless despite what looks like punishment. The 1 TB drives are still perfectly good in 2017 and are now employed in a NAS. The bottom ...
