About this product

Product Information

A masterpiece from one of the great contemporary American writers. 'A work of genius' Independent 'Marvellously funny . . . What better entertainment is there than a serious book which makes you laugh?' Spectator 'If you care about something you have to protect it. If you're lucky enough to find a way of life you love, you have to find the courage to live it.' Summer, 1953. In the small town of Gravesend, New Hampshire, eleven-year-old John Wheelwright and his best friend Owen Meany are playing in a Little League baseball game. When Owen hits a foul ball which kills John's mother, their lives are changed in an instant. It is dismissed as a tragic accident but Owen disagrees. He believes that he is God's instrument, put on Earth for a higher purpose. And as the boys come into adulthood to the background of the Vietnam War, a series of remarkable events show that perhaps Owen's divine plan was not imagined after all. Discover the funny yet poignant classic by the bestselling author of The World According to Garp. 'So extraordinary, so original, and so enriching' Stephen King, The Washington Post 'May justly join the classic American list' Anthony Burgess, Observer

Excellent seller! The book has been immediately shipped and arrived very fast. It was in excellent condition, still in its protective plastic wrap, and very well packaged. I couldn’t find the tracking number and had to contact the seller. They replied promptly with all the necessary information. I highly recommend them.

as described, fast delivery. Packaging inadequate for a heavy expensive boxset (thin cardboard sleeve with no bubblewrap or protective material) so the set arrived damaged. Customer service were quick to respond however, and sent a partial refund.

  • Rivetting and entertaining.

I heard this book mentioned on a BBC Book programme and I was intrigued. I bought a copy. It was almost unputdownable. It caught a wide range of emotions. It's quite a long book and can be taken in chunks. Very highly recommended. Any more details will spoil it for the reader of this review.

  • Brilliant

The best book ever. Have bought this one as the other one I have is somewhat worn. I love John who tells the story and also Owen Meany. These characters stay with you long after the book has been read. My favourite book of all. A beautiful story both funny and sad, full of wonderful characters. I particularly liked John's Grandma's kindness to Owen.

  • Carefully crafted

Long time since I read John Irving. Very descriptive and not exactly quick-paced. More a book to savour.
