  • Many people admire Stephen King because of his films, but the thrill of his writing is far greater and more sustained

I had seen the movie of the same title and found it compelling but I had not realised just what a brilliant writer Stephen King is. The descriptive passages and the insights into a writer's process help sustain the suspense and give the reader a rest from Annie's headlong descent into the abyss. "When you look into the abyss, the abyss also looks into you"- Nietzsche. Will she take Paul with her or will he escape is a question which began to smoulder in an incredulous me as I read. I could not put the book down as the flames were fanned into a conflagration by the skill of the writing, even though I knew the ending of the film. And yes, I cared, cared deeply, not only for Paul but for Annie, too.
