The combination of a great musician and a great writer works amazingly well. Some memorable songs, great arrangements combined with solid, humerous writing make this a must have for any Jackie Leven or Ian Rankin fan.
one for Jackies fans, made my other half laugh got to be worth the price of admission for that alone
This is a double album that will thrill any fan of Jackie Leven and Ian Rankin. The format is unusual, it is not, as described, a "talking book" in the strict sense of the phrase. The album is recorded live, in front of an audience, and the format is a dialogue between the two performers, who are obviously friends and fans of each other's work. Ian Rankin reads a short story that he has written and his readings are interspersed with songs by Leven. If you are a fan of either Leven or Rankin you will enjoy this album and it would be a good introduction to the other member of the duo if you are not already familiar with them both. This is an album that has to be listened to carefully, you wouldn't want it as background music to a party but it would make an excellent accompaniment on a long drive. Serious issues are involved in the story but they are treated with humour. Not to name-drop but I have met Ian Rankin at a book-signing event, a very good speaker, and it will always be a source of regret to me that I never had the opportunity to see Leven perform live. Anyone who is scottish, has a knowledge of Scotland or knows a Hi-Fi enthusiast will find even more to enjoy in this album. Best enjoyed with a large glass of a single malt of your choice (but not, of course, if you're driving).Read full review
