A Horseman Riding By
This is a BBC TV Drama series based on Book 1 of "A Horseman Riding By" novel by Delderfield. BBC originally broadcast this series in the late 1970s and I remembered it from my youth. I rate it average because the BBC issued DVD is from a slightly scratchy source and the acting is stilted and to my mind not very realistic. However, the old house which is the principal setting is beautiful as is the countryside. The film is about the life of a young officer invalided out of the Boer War who buys and renovates a Devonshire Manor and its farms. The film follows the life and times of the characters who live on and around the estate from the beginning of the Edwardian period through the First World War. I didn't watch TV as a kid so seeing something on the box was a treat, perhaps that's why I remembered this one so nostalgically, I re-read the books from time to time and thorougly enjoy them. I hoped the film which I hadn't seen since it was first released on TV 30 years ago would live upto the book and to my memories. It didn't. If you like this kind of TV drama there is another one I do recommend: "A Town Like Alice" done by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and the BBC (I think)
