A Film Everyone Should See
Made at the height of the Cold War (and just a few years before the Cuban missile crisis) this film casts a dark shadow across the human arc of time. Set in post-nuclear war Australia, the population lives in the knowledge that their days are numbered. But first they must deal with the fallout from their own lives. There is the burgeoning romance (which is doomed to fail) between the troubled submarine captain (Gregory Peck) and the spurned woman (Ava Gardner). Equally tragic is the relationship between the awkward young couple played by (a characteristically nervy) Anthony Perkins and Donna Anderson, whose hopes for their infant daughter are dashed. Each must face their bleak destiny individually. Fred Astaire steals the show as a cynical scientist who chooses to go out with a bang: ...
