  • Well worth watching.

I watched the play in the 1960s. It was very good then, the film version is very good now. Its a film of the period. People were more human then and less 'woke' Times have changed, mainly for the worse. DVD and case are in good condition.

  • The best from the best

Olivier's superb self-parody backed by a very impressive cast makes this a performance to treasure.

  • Unplayable

It doesn’t play on UK DVD players. Must be American

  • Olivier is masterful

Considering the range of his career, this film is one of many in which this stalwart of the british stage gives an all commanding performance. Joan Plowright too is touching, especially as she was to become his wife in real life. There is a seedy charm as John Osborne weaves a tale of desperation and sadness in the character of Archie Rice. One thing has to be said though; not all actors are like Archie Rice and that includes Olivier!

  • Touch of pathos

It is hard to feel much sympathy for the main character in this downbeat drama. Archie Rice is a rapidly fading music hall star who is blind to his own many faults and failings and dismissive of other people and their problems - such as their not being paid for being in his ghastly shows. Laurence Olivier, with a nice touch of pathos, is convincing as Rice. Albert Finney and Alan Bates made their screen debuts here and Joan Plowright(soon to be Olivier's real-life wife)is believable as his troubled daughter. But it must be said the whole production is a bit of a downer - like Archie's theme song, "Why Should I Care?"
