Starsky & Hutch are the best buddy cops in the history of television. Key elements in the success of the series are the charisma, charm, & chemistry of the two leads, Glaser and Soul, and great guest stars. The high production values include great music by leading jazz composer, Schifrin (Bullett), using film to record episodes (which still looks good on a wide-screen, almost 50 years later), some high-end LA locations, well--choreographed car chases & stunts, and Starsky's gorgeous two-tone Ford Torino. As street detectives, Starsky & Hutch dress in 1970s West Coast casual clothes, so that they blend in with the clientele at such venues as Huggy Bear's downtown bar and cafe, where they pick up most of their tips. Starsky is Mediterranean, impulsive, loose with his money, and has the ... Starsky & Hutch are the best buddy cops in the history of television. He's tighter with his money, has a plain car, and prefers to think a little longer before charging into action. Hutch gets `the girl' more often. Subsequent imitators have had the looks and athletic ability of Glaser & Soul, but their acting ability has only been matched in films such as 48 Hours or Lethal Weapon, or the slightly earlier Freebie and the Bean. After 30 years of postwar tv cop shows, innovative scripts were at a premium in the 1970s, and it is true that the show leans a lot on the personality of the actors, and reflecting the style and music of the decade. However, like Kojak, the series takes advantage of the permissiveness of the times to run story lines about drug use. Early on, one episode shows the duo turning a blind eye to a charismatic heavy user who helps them out with a key lead. However, the next episode shows the dangerous side of drugs, when the mob kidnap Hutch and temporarily turn him into an addict who betrays his girlfriend. Corruption at the very top was also a theme of the 1970s, in the wake of the Watergate hearings, and the pilot has a story line about a corrupt DA. Such story lines were controversial, and would have been less likely to run in the Reagan era after 1981. However, in many ways, 1970s cop shows were allowed to show more of the reality of the streets than in any other era before or since.
