People say avalanches are unpredictable. Is that true?And even if it is, is that an excuse for throwing yourlife away? It is certainly true that no-one is in aposition to claim that they can predict every avalanche,and it has to be said that some are particularlybaffling, even for the most experienced. Nevertheless, anavalanche is not a supernatural event, and without beingable to describe the release mechanisms in all theircomplexity, it is still possible to identify the majorityof hazardous situations. It is enough to be able to'read' the mountain to reduce considerably the threatposed by the 'white death'. This little guide will assistthose who wish to undertake this apprenticeship. In thefirst instance it permits a wider understanding of thephenomenon, using objective data, but also using theaccounts of witnesses and survivors. It reveals some ofthe indications which, for those who know how tointerpret them, will enable a local assessment ofavalanche hazard to be made and a number of pitfalls tobe avoided. Packaging is minimal. The only downside is extremely slow shipping. I rate them a C+. Nothing to gloat about but eventually you will get what you wanted.
