From the first incarnation of the Ark Royal - a ship that spearheaded the attack on the Spanish Armada in 1588 - to the aircraft carrier that was the Royal Navy's flagship until its decommissioning in 2011, this book tells the story of all five ships to bear the famous name. The ship that led the line in the 16th century was no more than a primitive wooden battleship but future Ark Royals included the first dedicated aircraft carrier to serve in the Great War, the ship that hunted and eventually sank the Bismarck in the North Atlantic in 1941, the 'Mighty Ark' that patrolled the world's trouble spots during the Cold War, and the aircraft carrier that led a large peacetime flotilla to Canada and the United States in the 21st century. The Little Book of Ark Royal follows the story of a Royal Navy that has played a pivotal role in world events for hundreds of years, from the Middle Ages to the Gulf Wars with many humanitarian missions in between. It also assesses what the future holds in store for Britain's fleet and asks whether the Ark Royal will return.
