22 dicembre 1957. Durante una tremenda tormenta di neve, una grande casa isolata in una cittadina dell'Iowa è sconvolta da un terribile delitto. Cinquantacinque anni dopo, in quella stessa casa rimasta chiusa per mezzo secolo, una donna di origini italiane decide di aprire un ristorante. È appena uscita dalla clinica psichiatrica, dove è stata ricoverata per quindici anni in seguito al suicidio del marito, ed è decisa a costruirsi una nuova vita. Ma non appena mette piede nell'edificio i fantasmi del passato tornano a tormentarla. Sarà lei, sempre più in bilico tra ragione e follia, a dovere scoprire il mistero dei fatti oscuri accaduti tra quelle mura. Una verità che, dopo tanti anni, fa ancora paura a molti.
