A Fantastic Ending for Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad
Justice for Jesse Pinkman. Director Vince Gilligan’s neo-Western crime drama film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019) is a phenomenal picture in its own right and an emotional sendoff to Jesse Pinkman from Gilligan’s legendary crime drama television series Breaking Bad. I loved Breaking Bad and Jesse Pinkman is one of the greatest characters ever written, a tragic figure, tortured and manipulated until his own ruin. El Camino is worth seeking out for any Breaking Bad fan with enjoyable fanservice from familiar faces, mature drama about trauma, and a heartwarming catharsis for viewers to finally see Jesse Pinkman turn over a new leaf. Now on the run, Gilligan lets Jesse have the potential for happiness after dealing with unspeakable trauma from his torture at the cruel hands of ... Justice for Jesse Pinkman. Now on the run, Gilligan lets Jesse have the potential for happiness after dealing with unspeakable trauma from his torture at the cruel hands of Neo-Nazis and guilt from his own crimes. Seeing Jesse’s careful escape from the police, farewells to friends, shocking encounters with old enemies, brave standoff with evil, to his satisfying fresh start was cathartic to me. I loved El Camino as a cool and suspenseful crime drama, but also as a harrowing drama that dives deep into Jesse’s broken psyche, riddled with guilt and anguish. Jesse Pinkmas has experienced manipulation, abuse, torture, and betrayal, so it’s nice to see El Camino address his fragile mental state and add a hopefulness. Gilligan’s writing is intense, emotionally raw, complex, and thoughtful. Jesse actually feels like he’s still in danger at all times with serious suspenseful tension. Gilligan’s depictions of helplessness during Jesse’s captivity are brutaI. Gilligan’s complex narrative structure of flashbacks into new harrowing encounters as Jesse has to stealth his way to freedom are fascinating with character reveals for Jesse’s personality. I loved Gilligan’s humor and heartfelt friendship themes with Skinny Pete and Badger sending Jesse off in style. I most appreciate Gilligan for his optimism aside from the bleak reality of Breaking Bad. El Camino offers Jesse a bright future in Alaska, clean and sober, so we do not leave Jesse reeling like the finale of Breaking Bad. Vince Gilligan’s direction is fearless with striking neo-noir and neo-Western aesthetics, themes, and style. Gilligan aims for Michael Mann’s Thief or Heat alongside James Mangold’s Logan and he certainly achieves. El Camino is dark, gritty, and disturbing. Jesse recalling his past calamity, barely outmaneuvering the cops, sneaking into dark buildings for guns and cash, encountering even more vile greedy men, have a Mexican standoff with crooks, to his sorrowful hidden passage to a new life in Alaska are all masterfully well directed. I hope Vince Gilligan writes and directs more films. Casting directors Sharon Bialy and Sherry Thomas enlist Breaking Bad’s character actor all stars, while bringing fearsome new faces into the fold. Aaron Paul is legitimately amazing and moving with a subtle expressiveness that ensures that meth cook on the lamb Jesse Pinkman is worth rooting for with his sad eyes, defeated body language, and resilient nature. I loved Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad and El Camino as I was always aware of Jesse’s desire for a clean new life and to not have to hurt anyone anymore. He could have killed the robbers and taken the money easily if he were a ruthless monster like Walter White, but Jesse is a good kid at heart, so he spares lives more than he takes them. Seeing Paul in scars and tears as Jesse felt nostalgic and cathartic to finally allow Jesse to smile and have hope again. I loved El Camino, especially just to see Aaron Paul deliver a masterful, nuanced lead actor performance. Krysten Ritter’s cameo as Jane Margolis feels as inspired, blunt, and thoughtful as ever. You can see why Jesse loved Jane with her playful personality, honest dialogue, and words of wisdom with an artful manner. It’s like every conversation Jesse had with Jane changed his life and way of thinking into something more positive and hopeful. Charles Baker is fantastic and touching as Jesse’s loyal best friend Skinny Pete. He’s so kind, considerate, and gentle as he sees what his friend has suffered and tries to help him however he can. Baker is heartbreaking when he says that Jesse is his hero. I cannot overstate how excellent Baker’s acting is as Skinny Pete in his scenes in El Camino. I like that Skinny Pete gets Jesse’s El Camino car. Matt Jones is hilarious as Jesse’s amiable stoner friend Badger. Jones’ outrageous conversations and debates between Badger and Skinny Pete are a riot! Jesse Plemons is chilling and fun as the detestable neo-Nazi Todd Alquist. His pretend sociopathic friendliness towards Jesse is so creepy. Plemons feels like a real sleaze as Todd and it works because he feels dangerous in how he doesn’t outright threaten Jesse, but we see some of the heinous torture Jesse endured at Todd’s hands. Kevin Rankin is scary and infuriating as the sadistic neo-Nazi torturer Kenny.
