At various times United buses and coaches operated in East Anglia and the Midlands as well as in the North-East of England; outside London, the company was perhaps the biggest of all the `territorials'. At one period its operating territories reached from Suffolk almost to the border between England and Scotland. Later, following the withdrawal operationally from East Anglia, the Company's slogan from Bridlington to Berwick said it all, added to United's involvement in express services from London to Newcastle, from Newcastle to Edinburgh and Glasgow, and from the Tyne and Tees areas across to Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool. Alan Townsin has produced the fascinating story - based on original research in company archives by several other researchers - of United's fleet from the outset to the end of the pre-war period. Alan is a native of the North-East and United was his fleet. There is nobody better qualified to be its historian. Transport writer John Banks has acted as editor and producer for the book, has researched the availability of pictures and provided captions. This will be the first volume in a series which will tell the whole United story up the disappearance of its name in very recent times.
