Fresh as a daisy 40 years on.
I was a child in the 1960s so I wasn’t really following pop music (my formative musical era being the 1970s). However, living in and loving London, ‘Waterloo Sunset’ is one of my all time favourite songs, evoking as it does my favourite part of the city. I saw this CD and wondered if it was worth getting just for the one track, but as I looked down the song listing, I realised that the only songs I remembered directly from the 60s (as opposed to all the ones I know from listening to them subsequently), were Kinks songs – 'Autumn Almanac', 'Dedicated Follower of Fashion', 'Lazy Sunday Afternoon', 'Apeman', 'Lola'. I didn’t appreciate the wonderfully literate, witty and incisive lyrics at the age of 7 or 8, but the melodies and distinctive sound had stayed with me. Listening to these ... Listening to these songs afresh was a real pleasure, with most of the tracks working both as being very “of their period” and also timeless. When someone is held up as being a great influence on and a major contributor to pop music, I often find that I don’t understand why this is so, but with Ray Davies, I think he deserves the recognition of being one of the finest songwriters of his generation, as demonstrated by the 25 tracks on this CD. This is a great CD for having in the car when you want to sing along to something, as many of the tunes are memorable and catchy; it is also a CD to sit and listen to, to catch all the nuances of the lyrics. As well as the more well known tracks, there are also a few I didn't know and it was great to discover them.
