Based on notorious television producer Chuck Barris' "unauthorized autobiography," Clooney's film reinforces Barris' outlandish claim that he lived a secret life as a hitman for the CIA. Sam Rockwell stars as Barris, a fresh-faced dreamer who moves to New York to find success in television. Pretty soon, he's written a hit song ("Palisades Park"), has shacked up with the ultra-peppy Penny (Drew Barrymore), and has his first successful game show, THE DATING GAME. But as if that weren't enough excitement, he is soon recruited by CIA Special Agent Jim Byrd (Clooney) to become a hired killer for the federal government. As Barris' subsequent shows (THE NEWLYWED GAME, THE GONG SHOW) take off, the conflicted producer uses them as a front for his undercover job, chaperoning winning couples all over the world while performing his deadly duties after hours. Along the way, he meets a shady cast of characters--including a sultry assassin (Julia Roberts)--who threatens to blow his cover and ruin his television career forever. Adapted by the daring and mischievous Charlie Kaufman, Clooney's film features yet another electrifying performance from Rockwell (LAWN DOGS, SAFE MEN).

So crazy it could be true.
Quirky and engaging film that has many fun twists and turns. Sam Rockwell is a force of nature in this film, and the script is delicious. The type of movie that actors must really enjoy making.

It's hard to believe that Charlie Kaufman is involved with this movie, but he did NOT come up with the story. This is of course based on the "Unauthorized Autobiography" of Chuck Barris, game show host by day, CIA assassin by night (or so he says) Kaufman however did a brilliant job adapting this for the big screen, in what becomes a truly funny, yet at times stunningly dramatic film, with great performances all around from the brilliant cast involved. Sam Rockwell stars (and I do mean STARS) as Barris, who is torn between his dream life as a TV show producer (and later host), an extreme womanizer, and an assassin for hire for the boys at Langley. He is approached by Jim Byrd (George Clooney, who also directed) in the early, more vulnerable stage of his life to become an assassin. "It can ... All the while his on again, off again, on again girlfriend Penny Pacino (Drew Berrymore, in an outstanding supporting role) is with him, and she is torn apart watching him struggle through his shows and something else that he can not tell her about. An outstanding job by first time director Clooney (with obvious signs of his buddy Soderbergh) which also features Julia Roberts in a small, but crucial role as a CIA agent. Definitely a film worth watching again and again

What can I say? I'm not only a Sam Rockwell fan, I adore Chuck Barris too. His comic genius is the understatement of the 20th century. This movie follows Chuck Barris's book (of the same title) very well. I had to have both, and I recommend both highly. I believe George Clooney (who directed this and also has a supporting role) won an Oscar for it. I believe Sam Rockwell should have won. That actor caught my attention ever since I saw him as Wild Bill in "The Green Mile." If you like Chuck Barris, The Gong Show or Sam Rockwell, this movie AND the book are must-haves. 5-stars!What can I say? I'm not only a Sam Rockwell fan, I adore Chuck Barris too. I watched the movie "Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind" on DVD tells the life story about game show producer Chuck Barris. Chuck Barris led a double life as a game show producer by day and a CIA assain agent at night. Chuck Barris created and produced several successful game shows on television in the 1960's and 1970's "The Dating Game", "The Newlywed Game" and "The Gong Show" which he hosted.
