It works well if you can get the bug to touch the electrical element which is shielded by a wire grill on either side of the element. Normally, they wouldn't touch the electrical element unless you can trap them, say against a window, until they wriggle enough so that they touch the electrical element through the wire grill. When that happens you can see a tiny spark and maybe smell burnt bug. This usually disables the bug so it can no longer fly, although it may not always kill it outright.
