Synopsis
The Other End of the Leashshares a revolutionary, new perspective on our relationship with dogs, focusing onourbehavior in comparison with that of dogs. An applied animal behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell looks at humans as just another interesting species, and muses about why we behave the way we do around our dogs, how dogs might interpret our behavior, and how to interact with our dogs in ways that bring out the best in our four-legged friends. After all, although humans and dogs share a remarkable relationship that is unique in the animal world, we are still two entirely different species, each shaped by our individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (like wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. The Other End of the Leashdemonstrates how even the slightest changes in your voice and the way you stand can help your dog understand what you want. Once you start to think about your own behavior from the perspective of your dog, you'll understand why much of what appears to be doggy-disobedience is simply a case of miscommunication. Inside you will learn How to use your voice so that your dog is more likely to do what you ask. Why "getting dominance" over your dog is a bad idea. Why "rough and tumble primate play" can lead to troubleand how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of trouble. How dogs and humans share personality typesand why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than "alphawannabees!" In her own insightful, compelling style, Patricia McConnell combines wonderful true stories about people and dogs with a new, accessible scientific perspective on how they should behave around each other. This is a book that strives to help you make the most of life with your dog, and to prevent problems that might arise in that most rewarding of relationships. From the Hardcover edition.

I'm so happy to have found this rare gem in your selection. It was wrapped carefully and arrived safely in a few days. The cookbook was impeccably described and all the pics showed a great amount of details. Considering how few of these are around the price was very reasonable. Thank you for the great service, I'm looking forward to finding more delightful treasures!

  • Great if you want to psychoanalyze your dog, know about monkeys or sheep herding.

This is not what was looking for. I wanted a book that would show me how to get my dog to behave. This book is how to psychoanalyze a dog and I have tried many of the procedures described and my dog just ignores them. This author has her PhD in animal behavior and is very impressed with herself. She discusses monkeys, apes and Chimps and the sounds they make and how to heard sheep. I don't have any sheep or monkeys and don't plan to ever get any so it does not benefit me to read a book with 245 pages that 80% does not apply to me. She said to only give the command once and not repeat it, she doesn't say what to do if the dog ignores the command the first command so I guess you go to another command?? . I would much rather have a 25 page pamphlet with short concise procedures to have a ...

  • Wonderful read!

I have had and trained dogs for 25 years and this book is FULL OF NEW enlightening material. Detailed descriptions of body language nuances tells you how to recognize what your dog is thinking and feeling. You will LEARN A LOT! I highly recommend this book.

  • Hard to get through

The Author has some good points about the relationship between dogs and how their owners perceive their pets. Many of the suggestions are just not practical in real life situations. She spent way too much time telling about her pets and as a clinical text I suppose is informative but not much help for me.

  • A chatty book that introduces positive reinforcement training concepts

I liked this book, it contained good information. However, it was wordy and more chatty than I was seeking. Sophia Yin's book, How to Behave so Your Dog Behaves, provides similar guidance and summarizes some of the same studies but has more meat on the bone.
