Kind of a corny movie now, but when it first came out back in the 1970's, it was the rage. We stood in long lines to see this one, and it wasn't disappointing. Here he was, Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood), a San Francisco police inspector. He didn't give a damn about your Miranda rights, and would as soon shoot long-haired hippies and Afro-sporting thugs as have lunch. He carried his hallmark .44cal S&W magnum revolver, "the most powerful handgun made in America, and will blow your head completely off". He is chasing a serial killer who has already killed a young woman and a ten year old black kid just for fun. Now he is going to shoot a Catholic priest unless the city pays him not to. The city wants to pay him, but Harry knows that this guy is nuts and just enjoys killing people. He has no fantasy about taking this guy alive. Harry just wants to track him down and kill him. He kidnaps a young girl and says that she only has enough air for a few hours. She is buried alive. Harry carries the ransom and is injured at the payoff, but stabs the kidnapper. He gets away and Harry tracks him down. He shoots the guy and when he won't talk, Harry violates his rights by torturing him. The girl is found dead. The kidnapper goes free because he wasn't read his rights, and Harry is in trouble. Harry keeps hounding the guy and eventually gets him to try to kill him. When he does, Harry kills him. Everybody wants to see cold-blooded Harry blow these creeps away. That's what all of the Dirty Harry movies were about. At the time they very entertaining, as cops turned the tables on crooks.Read full review
This is the movie that gave a "turbo boost" to Clint Eastwood's acting career, as well as providing a launch pad for four more "Dirty Harry" flicks...this one, however, is the most widely-acclaimed of the Harry films, in spite of the controversial nature of the lead character's treatment of criminals. Here, we are introduced to San Francisco police inspector Harry Callahan, a shoot-first type of cop who is always at odds with his superiors. The antagonist in the film, a sadistic serial killer (played excellently by Andy Robinson)who calls himself Scorpio (modeled after the so-called Zodiac killer of the late '60s who had seven confirmed victims and numerous other suspected victims-all murders unsolved to this day) who sets out to kill innocent victims until the city of San Fran ponies up $100,000. The excitement builds as Harry gets closer on Scorpio's trail-but after catching the killer, Harry forces him to tell the location of a 14-year old hostage through torture. The guy is released from custody because of this infringement on his "rights" and the killing starts all over again... "Dirty Harry" is a thrill ride for Eastwood fans throughout the movie. Of course, the scenery and backdrops are very dated, but this detracts not at all from the film's drama. Rated R for graphic violence, language and some nudity.Read full review
Clint Eastwood is humorously serious and mellow as San Franciscos Harry Callahan pursuing Scorpio. A psychotic serial killer who murders just for fun!!! Riveting edge of your seat action and just pure classic Clint at his best.

If you like cop movies, this one takes the cake. It's set in California in the 1970s, so it might be a little tough to relate to for some people, but the script and the acting holds up rock solid. Clint Eastwood is in his finest form as Harry Callahan, a homicide detective who has no patience for the finer points of the law. He knows his right and wrong, and is willing to break the so-called rules to catch the bad guy. This movie is awesome. As far as the DVD goes, there isn't much on there for special features, but the movie and the low price made up for that for me. Check this one out!
It is a great old movie
