Bought as OpenWrt 19 project "test device" - worked perfectly :)

Bought this to try making my own OpenWrt 19 router. Was in great condition and the installation of OpenWrt (using wires and tape because my son took all my solder to Uni :) method worked first time. Lovely little project - if you do it too, remember that routing is done in software - no hardware acceleration after the move to OpenWrt. I wasn’t ready for the slow down, but love the flexibility. I have set my HH5A up with three external network options: 1. Ethernet routing, along with 2. Wireless Ethernet cdc-ether (wwan) and 3. Wireless MBIM cellular working - the latter two work over the over the HH5A's USB port.

  • Most critical review

    OpenWRT

I find the LuCI OpenWRT web interface to be clunky and unintuitive. It is a bit technical than what I am used to which I found required some background reading and research just to get the hub to create a PPP session with my ISP John Lewis. It is a lot more technical than any shop bought WiFi Router you can buy which is not a good thing in my opinion. However the WiFi is excellent on this hub it gives me a WiFi signal in parts of the house where there was no signal with other WiFi Routers. I found that buying this service is the cheapest and easiest way of getting a powerful router.

  • LEDE router works as expected :-)

Delivery was quicker than expected (a few days) and the router looks brand new. I could easily get my PC to talk to the router but it took some googling to find out why I couldn't get the router to talk to my ISP (TalkTalk). [something to do with LEDE automatically enabling an ATM bridge for pppoe, which is not required for pppoa but it left it configured and caused problems connecting to my ISP] The router has been working for 6 days now without any problems

  • Unlock the hidden potential in your old PlusNet or BT Router

For a small amount of money you can get access to the feature-set and performance of a much more expensive router that is hidden below the surface of the stock one. Changing the software image is somewhat tricky and involves accessing a couple of tiny unmade connections on the router main "board" - I'm reasonably technical but I'm happy for someone else to do that job, which is what this *service* (as you need to mail in a donor router) is all about. I wanted to create additional networks for my devices around the house (Smart TV's, Alexa etc) and keep them away from the laptops and tablets but I couldn't do that with the software on the ISP provided router and didn't want to spend a fortune on a hardware upgrade. After the software upgrade, I now have proper VLANs, Firewall Zones and I can even add custom firewall rules just like a commercial grade product. With great power comes great responsibility! This new software image is OpenWRT/LEDE based on Linux. It has a very good feature-rich User interface but it doesn't have a "clueless mode" like some ISP routers so be prepared to do a little bit of reading (and capture your current ID and password that you use to log onto the ISP network) before you plug it in. I had to create a new "VLAN 101" sub-interface (look it up) on the dsl connection and add my UserID & Password - TBH there wasn't much more to it than that but I intend to explore more features over time. Router is rock solid @ 40Mb/sec with multiple 4K Netflix & iPlayer streams. I also get far more info & stats about my connection and can log everything. Highly recommended - but not for the absolute technophobe.

  • LEDE - OpenWRT - LuCI

Where do we start? If you are reading this thinking about wireless freedom, then read on. On it's own, the HomeHub 5 is a good router, it's the same board and bits they throw in the PlusNet Hub One unit. Exactly the same! The "upgrade" is where LEDE, OpenWRT and LuCI come in. The upgrade itself is a hard job, involves some precision soldering and well, I even tried it myself and I consider myself very good with electronics, but this was a little too beyond me. So, the alternative? Buy one on Ebay. So, what do you get? Well, a router that's been set onto Beast-Mode from the get go. It's not plug n play, so if you are in anyway nervous about router settings, isps and their respective connections then either read up or walk away. That said, once you have it hooked up to your ISP connection, man is this thing sweet. Think about all the things you've wanted to do with your stock router and then re-write the book. This thing has everything, I mean everything. What I wanted from this was to be able to use a vpn, my own dns, my own ip scheme, to bridge to another router (to use as an extender) and finally 6in4 ipv6. I got the lot. Well worth the price paid. If you are a super geek, want freedom from your stock router then get one of these. Not for the nervous or non geeky in my opinion, this is a real toy.

  • Awesome OpenWRT Modem/Router!

One of the very few models/brands that fully support OpenWRT. (Most Modem/Routers that work with OpenWRT only the Router part works and the modem is not supported). Some of the features I really like are: - Adjustable power for the transmit antennas. (I have plenty of speed & range so I use it to lower the power and therefore the radiation exposure from the antennas when I'm close to them.) - Adjustable SNR Offset for Modem. (Can manually increase or decrease download speed of the ADSL modem until it gets too many errors or line drops or vice versa) - Wi-Fi for 2.45 Ghz is available for Channels 12,13 & 14 - Extra Functions Can Be Added (I followed the guide on OpenWRT . org called WiFi Toggle. Using some code, now the WPS button turns on & off all Wi-Fi! Great for limiting RF exposure when you aren't using Wi-Fi and quick to turn back on when you need it! Only downsided are: 1) This router has small internal antennas and no standard sockets for attaching external antennas. This is not too hard to fix if you don't mind soldering. The guide is: BT Home Hub 5 Antenna Modification by Andrew McNeil on YouTube. 2) Smelled Smokey. Not sure if everything or only some parts where from a smokers house. After I wiped everything down the the modem/router & power supply were okay and I only had to replace the network & phone cable. Luckily I already had spares so this cost me nothing.

  • Excellent

Full thumbs up! Works like a charm. Getting 70Mbit/sec from TalkTalk on wired connection same as native TalkTalk router. Getting 50Mbit/sec instead of 60Mbit/sec wireless compared to native but that is as expected - as written on OpenWRT website. However the loss is not noticeable and the device more than makes up for this in configurability. A monster, a Mercedes-Benz of configurability. I'm very happy to sacrifice a tiny bit of Wireless throughput for that. I'm getting 60Mbytes/sec on wired connection when talkng to NAS; this is a big improvement. Also I have easily been able to convert 5th ethernet port from useless "WAN" port to a normal 5th ethernet port 1Gbit ethernet like all the others. To me that's significant as I don't have any other wired switch and I want lots of wired devices connected. Yes, you've got to be a little technical to set this up, but if you're you'll be fine. Tested on TalkTalk VDSL2 and recommended!

  • Unbeatable for the price

As per the other reviews, LEDE allows for commercial grade features on domestic routers. I bought this for multiple vlan'd SSID's to segregate my network. This router is an ac1300 router. With the features you get, you won't be able to get a similarly priced off the shelf unit. It's currently in quarantine on my network checking for any obscure activity (this is just a precaution on my end as I built a secure network and I'm just paranoid when buying off eBay where other things could be installed without knowing). I havn't found any unusual activity yet but it's only been a couple hours as I write this. So far so good though and if all is well, I'm very happy with this router

  • Cheap and easy way to get a powerful router.

Superb item. Be warned this is not for those who want to plug it in and have it "just work". Some effort on your part is needed to get it working, but once running you have an extremely powerful and flexible home network management system. If you're an IT geek then stop using your ISP's router and get one of these.

  • Exactly What I needed

BT wouldn't give me one for free so I turned to ebay, download speed went from 16mbps to 23mbps as soon as I got it up and running. I'd say that's a win for me. Increasing number of wifi-eating devices in my home so this was necessary. Have no fear!
