The accompanying video sequence allows the reader to hear and see the patient, providing the next-best-thing to bedside teaching. Through the direct observation of the patient, information is retained more easily than through a traditional textbook format and a human interest to the case studies is created. For pre-clinical medical students (USMLE Step 1 and UK undergraduates), the basic science involved in each case will be of importance; while at higher levels, in the clinical years and postgraduate study (MRCP, MRCS, USMLE Steps 2 and 3), the clinical aspects of the cases should be of great value with the basic science used for revision.
