Synopsis
From Library Journal Gillett here explores the values inherent in Victorian painting, showing how they have been downplayed in contrast to those found in the literature and science of that period. She thereby restores to their proper place once-prominent artists like Luke Fildes, Hubert Herkomer, and G.F. Watts. While the achievements of key men are covered, the two best chapters treat Victorian women painters; the role of women as artists is well discussed in both a broad cultural context and in terms of specific careers. These chapters contain valuable insights into the problems facing the serious British woman painter. The final chapter, which looks at the nature of the late Victorian art world and its public, concludes that painters and their audience began distancing themselves from each other due to changing social conditions. This book updates Quentin Bell's Victorian Artists (1967) for use in academic and research art library collections.

- 2***0 (129)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseShipping was quick, packaging was excellent, condition was acceptable as described -- binding loose but pages intact. I did message buyer asking about mold and didn't receive a reply -- luckily, there appears to be no mold. Great value for a 100+ yr old book!Mistress of Shenstone by Florence L. Barclay HC 1910 (#335940140985)
- a***p (8)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseI received my book in absolutely pristine condition, better than described! Which is impressive because the copy is from 1930 and it looks like it has never been handled. It shipped very quickly, even faster than the estimated time given by a week. It was packaged very carefully. The book and shipping price was also very fair considering the age and condition of the book and the shipping speed. I am very pleased with this seller and will be ordering from them again in the future. All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque HC 1930 (#396258036329)
