Another puzzle piece in the Star Wars universe falls into place with this action-packed prequel to Hugo-winner Zahn's Star Wars: Survivor's Quest (2004). Familiar characters such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, young Anakin Skywalker and the evil Lord Palpatine (aka Darth Sidious) make appearances, but the true star is Commander Thrawn, a red-eyed, blue-skinned alien. On the Outbound Flight, a mammoth Jedi exploration and colonization vessel sent to far-off reaches of the cosmos to identify potential Force-users and hunt down a lost knight, Jedi Master Jorus C'baoth struggles with an inappropriate lust for power. Thrawn's attack on the ship (secretly influenced by Darth Sidious's agents) insures his own eventual exile from his race and sets other sinister wheels in motion. As these old and new characters wrestle with difficult moral questions, Zahn deftly portrays their inner struggles in fluid prose, while also affirming his status as a skillful creator of dazzling futuristic worlds. Though more time with the doomed Outbound Flight's passengers, who are the subject of Survivor's Quest, would round out the story, the book is nonetheless an enthralling page-turner sure to appeal to its target audience.Read full review
I love the Star Wars series written by Timothy Zahn. His are the only series I read. The book that came before this one was called Survivor's Quest. That book was a great book but it left you wondering at some things. The things I wondered were: How did this all come about? What happened to these people to make them hate Jedi so strongly? But most of all, HOW DID THIS ALL COME ABOUT? I was very excited when I read Outbound flight and discovered all the missing pieces. The book does have a sad ending but it is a lovely book and I would highly recommend it. And why did I buy it? I wanted to have my own Timothy Zahn Star Wars Collection, so that I could read the books any time I want rather then going to the library. All considered, this is a great book for anyone who loves Timothy Zahn, Star Wars, or just a good mystery/action. (THIS BOOK IS ACTUALLY THE MYSTERY SOLVER. THE ACTUAL MYSTERY WAS PUBLISHED BEFORE OUTBOUND FLIGHT CAME OUT AND IT IS IN SURVIVOR"S QUEST. ALSO BY TIMOTHY ZAHN.)Read full review
Zahn keeps the story moving in a typical Star Wars fashion with well developed characters and an intricate, though somewhat transparent plot line. Very entertaining story, especially enjoyed more detailed glimpse of Thrawn, probably the best character outside of Lucas' environment. Zahn is usually excellent at bringing in new characters such as Car'das or expanding on existing ones like C'boath, a very unique jedi. I have read all books in the "Star Wars expanded universe" and consider Zahn the best, Stackpole is also very good. I would rate Outbound higher if I was comparing it to other Star Wars novels, instead I choose to evaluate it against Zahns' better works the Thrawn Trilogy and the Conquerers saga (both excellent and highly entertaining).
A very good book- keeps you interested from start to finish, really no slow spot! A couple of things were left a bit unresolved, but over all an excellent plot, good story movement, and intriguing characters. One of my favorite Star Wars books, and Timothy Zahn is definitely one of the best SW authors!
As usual, Zahn satisfies excellently with this masterful addition to the Star Wars universe, delving into the details of the mysterios outbound flight project. The book has great characters and many appearances from Thrawn, a fan favorite. It also contains humorous references to its sister novel, Survivor's Quest.
Excellent offer! Book was in great condition.

This was purchased as a gift for a child who loves all StarWars. I rate it as excellent simply because this copy was autographed by the author. I have not read the book.
Like always, Zahn delivers another story that is worthy of the big screen. It is a very fast paced story, that gives you a good background on some of Zahn's more notable characters. This was an excellent book and I would recommend it to all.
If you've ever read and enjoyed any of timothy Zahn's expanded universe Star Wars books, you'll like this one. There are a few familiar characters from both Zahn's books and the films. It is a very quick read and meshes well with other books and films.
Timothy Zahn is one of my favorite Star Wars writers. There is not a dull moment through the whole book. It brings out the origins of some characters as well. Excellent read !!!!!!
