Additional Information
Richard Burton stars as Major John Smith, a British agent during WWII who is in charge a group of six Allied soldiers given the task of rescuing an American general--who is reportedly in possession of the plans for D-Day--from a seemingly impregnable German fortress located high in the Bavarian Alps. Assisting Smith is the sole American in the operative, Lieutenant Morris Schaffer (Clint Eastwood), a fierce soldier skilled with an array of deadly weapons. As the men penetrate the fortress, facing an endless supply of German soldiers, it becomes apparent that some members of the small Allied team may not be who them seem to be. Full of thrilling action set pieces, the screenplay was written by Alistair MacLean, adapted from his own best selling novel.

    A classic war film

A classic war film made in the 1968 classic fashion. Worth a watch and although a simple storyline it maintains a degree of uncomplicated integrity that is a good addition to a film collection. Adventure, excitement and some of the classic big name actors of the time.

  • Great film but with obvious errors.

I've always liked this film but it has some obvious errors in it. The actors haircuts and hairstyles in WW2 films always make me laugh as well. WW2 happened in the 1940s but the actors in these films always seem to have hairstyles that reflect the era in which the film was made. Both Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood have hair which is too long and looks out of place as it shows below their caps at the back. Clint Eastwood's quiff also looks way out of place for a WW2 German soldier. The helicopter also made me laugh. If there were helicopters in the 1940s, they would have been in the very early stages of development and not the current 1960s model shown. Derren Nesbit's black SS uniform might have looked 'sinister' but the SS stopped wearing the black uniform at the outbreak of the war ...

  • EAGLES DO DARE

Classic "Boys own" war drama. The two leads make a great team and should have collaborated again.

  • Is there a better way to spend a wet Sunday afternoon?

Broadsword calling Danny Boy, broadsword calling Danny Boy is for me one of the most iconic movie lines. I'm instantly taken back to the wet sundays spent watching war movies and this has to me my favourite ( OK maybe 633 squardron comes close or Battle of the Bulge or Von Ryans Express.... ) A great yarn about double crossing, rescuing a General ( or is he? ) spies, traitors and retribution, this film has it all. Made in the late 60's with some great cinematography, a thoroughly entertaining film. 5 Stars for me.
