- As George Roy Hill observed, A LITTLE ROMANCE is, in many ways, a remake of his earlier take on adolescence, THE WORLD OF HENRY ORIENT. But in this film the delicate relationship between stars Thelonious Bernard as Daniel and Diane Lane as Lauren is reciprocal. Both on the cusp of adolescence, they meet on a film set in Paris when Daniel spots Lauren reading a book. The mutual discovery of their shared intellectual precocity sparks a romance, and the two begin dating amid the City of Lights. When Daniel ends up slugging the egomaniacal director boyfriend (David Dukes) of her self-absorbed actress mother, Kay (Sally Kellerman), Lauren is forbidden to see him. Naturally, she refuses to obey. After Julius (Laurence Olivier), a charming old con man, spins a tale for the couple about lovers kissing under the Bridge of Sighs in Venice at sunset, they arrange to go, taking him along as chaperone. Since none of their parents has been informed about the impromptu trip, an international search is soon under way. A completely charming fable of adolescent romance set against picture-postcard European backgrounds, the film is less about the emotional roller coaster of love than the innocent joy of finding a soulmate at last. The kids are perfectly cast in what may be Lane's best film, and one only has to see Olivier kiss his fingers and press them against the window as he watches the couple disappear to appreciate genius at work.

A Hidden Gem of Young Love
This is not an epic Jane Austen romantic tale, however the engaging actors and the clever story line in this movie provide adventurous tension, innocent charm and intelligent humor to create a romantic cachet that would appeal especially to young teens - and light hearted adults for that matter. Though released back in 1979, the beautiful cinematic settings of Paris, Verona and Venice add to the timeless charm of this movie.

Timeless Classic

A pleasure to watch from start to finish. Truly, they don't make them like this anymore.
This is a wonderful movie about a couple of exceptional kids dealing with their lives and family in a mature, funny, upbeat way. The superb acting and George Roy Hills direction made this a joy to watch and reminded me that all films don't have to be angry, crude, and depressing.

Have you ever seen a movie at just the right moment in your life? A movie that you can remember when you first saw it and what you were doing? Well, this is just one of those films for me. "A Little Romance," a movie based-upon the French novel "E=mc2 mon amour," by Patrick Cauvin, is a wonderful coming of age film about two young, naive teenagers in modern day France. Set in the year of its filming, the 1970's, an American Girl meets a French boy of the same age and intellect. The two come from different socio-economic backgrounds as the American girl, played by Diane Lane, is a daughter of a European telecommunications giant, and the French boy, played by Thelonious Bernard, is a son of a tourist cheating French cab driver. As young romance blooms, they meet an elderly English gentleman in France played by Laurence Olivier. He tells them fabulous stories including one about the Legend of the Bridge of Sighs. The Legend states that if two lovers kiss in a gondola under the Bridge of Sighs, at sunset, while the Bells of the Campanile toll, they will enjoy eternal love. Of course, the two young lovers embark on a journey from France to Venice, Italy to attempt to fulfill this legend. The usual coming-of-age process occurs as the naïve young teenagers become more wise to the world and its realities. Laurence Olivier does a superb job and Diane Lane in her first movie makes an amazing first impression. It’s easy to see why she became a recognizable Hollywood Star. Thelonious Bernard is also in his first role, but after only one other roll, he left the movie industry and now enjoys his dental practice in France with his family. The movie was a sleeper at the box office and and I saw it for the first time on HBO sometime after it left the theaters. I was 14 years of age, about the same age as the principle characters and it made a deep impression upon me. Although the film was not a big hit, the film made an impression on the movie business winning an Oscar for Best Music, Original Score by Georges Delerue. This is an incredible sound track with variations from Vivladi as well as original composistions. It was also nominated for Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium from the Oscars. Lane and Bernard also won Special Best Juvenile Actress and Actor Awards, respectively from the Young Artists Awards along with Lane winning the Young Artist Award that year. The Young Artists Award also recognized the film as the year's Best Motion Picture Featuring Youth. The Golden Globes and Writers Guild or America also nominated the film in various categories. Overall, this movie is both entertaining and heart warming. As an adult, it may bring you back to your youth when love was fresh and new. As a teenager, the movie may awaken your senses, fill your heart with dreams, and lead you to believe in legends. ToddRead full review
