    • The book of the Patriots

The book is a compelling read if you have the interest of how the Patriot class of locomotives evolved from the rebuilt L&NWR Claughton class. The first two rebuilds 45500 Patriot, and 45501 St Dunstan's used basically the driving wheels with the wheel centre's boses enlarged a trait of the Claughton class. The rest of the class 45502 to 45551 where all new construction. Some where rebuilt to have the Stanier tapered boiler along with a double chimney, tekeing the same power classification as the rebuilt Royal Scots. The book details the building of the Patriots and the scraping of them along with the names the carried the last one named in 1959 45528 R.E.M.E. A very well researched and documented book an excellent read to anyone who is interested in the story of the Patriots.
