Spolied by the wrong sized 'o' ring.
There is a large 'o' ring that seals this into the toilet. The thickness of the 'o' ring is less than the earlier vent and this causes the vent to be a loose fit into the toilet. I found the original 'o' ring was still in good condition (although 17 years old) and so I fitted this and all is well. If the old 'o' ring had been damaged, the new vent would have been useless as it would have leaked quite severely. There is a large 'o' ring that seals this into the toilet.
