Got this to playback my digital8, hi8, and video8 tapes. Read the manual before I bought so I know what to expect. Previously, I got a hitachi handycam but that could not play any of those, so I guess Sony is the way to go. Pros: - Well packaged, and as described Cons: - The switch for toggling between record and playback mode is somewhat loose, so sometimes during playback the unit turns off - Video8 tape is not playing back properly

Good camera for the price. The features are good, takes excellent quality video and Digital 8 tapes are much cheaper than minidiscs. The one downside is having to buy a firewire card and cable if you've got a PC. Still, the ease of use is hard to beat. Takes great in-car video and has expandability features- I was able to fit a wide angle lens to the camera for better a perspective of the in-car video. The Super SteadyShot anti-shake ability of the camera is very good and thus makes for a much more enjoyable viewing experience when shooting shaky events like scooting around a race track. The nightshot feature is nice if you keep the camera still. If you pan with the camera, heavy blurring occurs and the camera has difficulty focusing. But still a nice feature to have on a camera- without it, viewing ability would be poor in the dark for certain. Another feature I like about the camera is it's ability to take still pictures. Most pictures I take are for reference purpose and not for "framing." So the basic ability of the camera to take stills suits me just fine and actually can be quite convenient.Read full review
This is my third 730. The other two are still working. I use the cameras to film live music in niteclubs. Although not the newest technology these cameras are great workhorses. I use them handheld and they have been dropped-but they keep on ticking. Because I use them at low light levels the picture quality difference between them and an HDcam is virtually unnoticeable. I appreciate the manual iris, and focus adjustment. The only negatives I have noticed is the autofocus can be a little slow in a busy frame and they are heavier than the newest cameras. What I like: Many features, durable, good image quality, easy to operate.
Still a great camera after all these years. Just the right editing capabilities. Really easy to use Likes: features: firewire/USB/fades/zoom/backward compatability of format/night vision/memory stik option Dislikes: Relatively bulky, upside-down tape access (time consuming when on a tripod) My complements to the Sony designers/engineers on a versatile and durable product.
